Phyllis Cohen: The Building Blocks Program for Therapists
Karen Buckwalter welcomes Phyllis Cohen, Founder and Director of the New York Institute for Psychotherapy Training in Infancy, Childhood and Adolescence (NYIPT), for their discussion on Cohen's Building Blocks program for therapists.
In addition to being the Founder and Director of the NYIPT, she also teaches and supervises there. She and Dr. Beatrice Beebe have Co-Directed the World Trade Center Project for women who were pregnant and lost their husbands in the WTC disaster on 9/11/2001.
Cohen has published numerous professional papers, and with Beebe and Lachman she has co-authored "The Mother-Infant Interaction Picture Book: Origins of Attachment" (Norton, 2016). In addition, she has co-edited the books: “Mothers, Infants and Young Children of September 11th: A Primary Prevention Project,” with Beebe, Sossin and Markese (Routledge, 2012), and "Healing after Parent Loss in Childhood and Adolescence: Therapeutic Interventions and Theoretical Considerations,” with Sossin and Ruth (Rowman and Littlefield, 2014).
Dr. Cohen has developed the Building Blocks Program where she teaches and supervises therapists who work dyadically with birth mothers and young children in foster care at an agency in NYC. She has also been a volunteer doing assessments and writing affidavits in the Immigration and Asylum Seeker Project at NYU.
Dr. Cohen is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at NYU, and is in private practice in Brooklyn, New York.
