Deborah Blum: Harry Harlow & The Science of Affection - Part 1
Launching a four interview, eight-part miniseries on the roots and history of attachment theory, Karen welcomes science journalist and author Deborah Blum to the show to discuss her 2002 book Love At Goon Park: Harry Harlow and the Science of Affection. Part two will be released on Tuesday, May 11th.
Deborah Blum grew up in a family of inquisitive people, with a journalist mother and scientist father, traveling the world with them and her three sisters. She initially pursued the sciences at Florida State University as a chemistry major, until she transferred to the University of Georgia as a journalism major after setting her hair on fire in the chem lab.
After spending some time as a beat reporter, she returned to school, this time as a grad student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to study science writing. This led to her long career as a science journalist and author, including her book, Love at Goon Park: Harry Harlow and the Science of Affection, along with her six other books covering topics ranging from serial killers in the 1920s to the early foundational work in the field of gender studies.
